Sønderho gamle Fuglekøje

Sønderho Old Duck Decoy was established 1866 as a partnership with 50 shares.

Descendants of the original shareholders own the shares.
When the Duck Decoy was established, a kind of bird sanctuary was established in the Albuebugten
(The Elbow Bay) in Fanø to make certain that the birds remained in that area. In a way, those people were ahead of their time, as those exact same thoughts were behind the idea of establishing no-hunting areas in the 1990s.

The Duck Decoy is thus situated in a conservation area. From 1960 to 1999, the Game Biological Institute ran the Duck Decoy, which was used for ringing birds until 1992.

At the Duck Decoy general assembly on 22 September 2001, the represented parties encouraged the new board of directors to work on re-establishing the Duck Decoy in order to open it to the public.

Visitors can experience and gain insight into the extensive bird life of the Jutland Wadden Sea through seasonal exhibitions, a nature trail through the Decoy and through direct communication with the bird catcher.
The experiences follow the course of nature throughout the year. Several visits to the Duck Decoy are therefore rewarding.

The Society for the Preservation of Sønderho Old Duck Decoy has been founded with the purpose of supervising the future operation of the Duck Decoy.

The earlier Ribe County has approved the project and passed it on to the Nature Conservancy Board with recommendation.
